Kids Cafe
The Kids Cafe program is one of the nation’s largest meal service programs, conceived by Feeding America—the nation’s food bank. The program is a partnership with established afterschool and summer programs that provide safe places for children to meet role models and to participate in activities designed to enhance their educational, physical, and social development. The Central Virginia Food Bank’s Kids Cafe Program has been in operation since December 1997, and sites are located in some of the most impoverished communities in the Richmond and Tri-Cities metro area. Funding for the existing Kids Cafe programs comes from several large corporate gifts, foundation funding, other private sources, as well as individual contributions. The program qualifies to receive USDA subsidized reimbursement by meeting dietary requirements of meals. Children ages five to 17 may receive Kids Cafe meals five days a week throughout the school year. Kids Cafe partners operate structured programs of mentoring, tutoring, cultural enrichment, and social activities. The Kids Cafe provides the nutrition component of these programs. Our Community Kitchen prepares the nutritious and appealing meals, which are delivered to the sites (Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs, schools, churches, and others). In order to receive meals, a site must be located in a school zone whose free and reduced meal eligibility is greater than 50 percent.
