4-hour Dementia Specific Orientation Training
The Alzheimer’s Association is offering a 4-hour orientation workshop for professional caregivers in the Richmond area. This training meets the requirements set by the Department of Social Services for persons working in Special Care Units. The workshop covers the following issues related to working with persons with dementia and memory impairment: The TOPICS are: "Dementia: What is it?", “Communication”, “Behavior” and "Environment and Safety". The workshop covers the following issues related to working with persons with dementia and memory impairment: Know the parts of the brain and their function, State three things that are important for brain health, List the risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, Define dementia and its symptoms, State reversible dementia diseases; Define communication, Describe verbal and non-verbal communication, State physical changes in the brain that affect communication, Know how sensory changes effect communication and, Know positive communication techniques through the stages of dementia; Recognize possible causes for behavioral issues, State behaviors that are a result of dementia diseases, Evaluate possible causes of behavioral issues and Practice possible interventions and responses for behavioral issues; Understand the effect of the environment on all people, specifically for people with dementia, Recognize types of environment that promote independence, dignity and well being, Know the sensory effects of environment for persons with dementia, Know the need to be alert and aware of the person with dementia and potential hazards in environment, and Know how to promote and maintain a safe environment for the person with dementia. This training meets the requirements set by the Department of Social Services for persons working in Special Care Units. Certificates of Completion will be issued upon completion of training and receipt of payment.
