Helping to Build Healthy Communities

In the spring of 2011, The Cameron Foundation identified the need to gather information concerning the availability of health and human services resources and associated needs in Sussex, a rural county in its service area.

In the spring of 2011, The Cameron Foundation identified the need to gather information concerning the availability of health and human services resources and associated needs in Dinwiddie, a rural county in its service area.

These districts have a relatively high cancer burden and large medically-underserved areas.  The comprehensive assessment of cancer needs specific to each community will be used to develop a holistic strategy to improve cancer outcomes, and will utilize strategies that are culturally appropriate to these communities.  As part of this strategy, funding is being offered to research scientists at VCU for research projects that address one or more of the needs identified in the needs assessments.  Project activities must occur within one or more of the four health districts, and engage community resources in the research.

This three year documentation study conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University takes a look at The Cameron Foundation's early years of capacity-building investments in Southside Virginia and adds to the national dialogue among philanthropists about how to further improve this work.

The follow data is a snapshot of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the Petersburg Continuum of Care service area collected during the 2011 Winter Point-in-Time Count.

2011 legislative agenda includes the following priority issues:
• Protecting the citizens of Virginia from predatory lenders.
• Ending the cuts-only approach to addressing the revenue shortfall and enhancing our state revenue.
• Supporting progressive tax reform so that all citizens pay their fair share.
• Preventing all forms of discrimination for residents of Virginia.
• Expanding health care, child care subsidies and housing assistance for low-income families.
• Supporting comprehensive immigration reform that treats immigrants with dignity and fairness.
• Reforming our redistricting process through a nonpartisan or bipartisan commission.
• Automatically restoring the civil rights of felons who have completed the service of their sentences.

The Culturally and Linguistically appropriate health care services (CLAS) requirements obligates each health district to provide suitable language access for all district services at no additional cost to the patient. This report determines the need for translation or interpretive services by measuring the LEP (Limited English Proficiency) of the residents in our region through census data.

Universal Leaf Foundation
Universal is very active in supporting community service activities both financially and through the volunteer service efforts of its employees. Through the Universal Leaf Foundation, Universal provides substantial financial support to numerous community improvement initiatives. The Company also provides a Matching Funds Program, where employee contributions to charities are matched dollar for dollar. These programs are combined with numerous examples of regional and local support to charities. This support is delivered to programs and groups addressing key areas of community concern including: child welfare, education, health and well-being, food security, environmental protection, historic preservation and support for the arts.
 
Virginia Health Care Foundation
A public/private partnership, VHCF helps uninsured and underserved Virginians both through innovative programs and by providing grants to free clinics, community health centers and others statewide. Since 1992, VHCF's partnerships and programs have:
- Provided health care through more than 2.1 million patient visits;
- Generated more than $842 million in free medications for more than 200,573 individuals;
- Enrolled over 50,000 children in state-sponsored health insurance; and
- Provided more than $6.7 million in grants to help establish or expand 42 dental safety net programs and projects.
