Assisted Living Defined

Defined as a type of long-term care facility for elderly or disabled people who overall have good mobility but who may need help with some activities of daily living, or simply prefer the convenience of having prepared meals and nursing staff on call.



Assisted Living Descriptor Definitions

Adult day care - provides a planned program of activities designed to promote well-being through social and health related services.

Assisted living facilities - home-like facility, primarily for the elderly or disabled, which provides assistance with some activities of daily living for those who need some help, but are able to live and function for the most part on their own.

Auxiliary grant participation - accepts reimbursement through state and/or locally funded assistance program to supplement the income of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipient or adult who would be eligible for SSI except for excess income, who resides in an adult care residence, assisted living facility or in an adult foster care with an approved rate.

Fitness Facilities/Program - Offers exercise equipment and/or programs.

Independent Living - a housing arrangement, often for the elderly or disabled, which encourages self sufficiency and maintenance of regular daily activities.

Medical Rehabilitation -provides programs to support recovery and activities following an injury or acute care/hospitalization.

On-site medical services - provides medical care at the assisted living facility.

Prepared meals - provides home delivery of or on-site meals.

Respite care - provides temporary care to reliever a person's regular caregivers from the responsibilities of caring for individuals with chronic physical or mental disabilities.

Security -  provides a system to monitor the safety of guests and consumers.

Transportation - provides transportation required to maintain daily activities (such as doctor appointments, shopping, etc).
